HEMISFAIR  – presented by J.M. Gonzalez and Anne Krause - Hemisfair Conservancy President/Executive Director

As part of the 2012-2017 Bond Program, the City of San Antonio retained HDR Engineering, Inc. (HDR) to provide preliminary engineering services (PER) for the analysis of the ultimate development for Hemisfair. The park is located in Bexar County at the heart of its urban center in downtown San Antonio, TX. It is bounded by US Highway 281, Cesar Chavez Blvd., Alamo St., and Market St. just south of the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. The study summarized findings from the project site investigation, recommended establishing a street network, presented the ultimate development drainage conditions, and determine the phasing of the internal streets. The phasing, street grid, and drainage improvements developed provided the foundation for the proposed improvements and ultimate vision of Hemisfair Park. With their implementation, Hemisfair Park will continue to be a go-to location for the community to work, play, and live. Since the completion on the report, the first improvements have happened within the park including Yanaguana Gardens, Water and Nueva Street, Historic Home preservations, and The ‘68 Apartments.

J.M. Gonzalez is a section lead for the HDR San Antonio Transportation Group. He has 19 years of experience in engineering design and construction of roadways, bicycle facilities, transit planning, landscaping, streetscaping, on-street parking, low impact development (LID), drainage systems, and has planned utility adjustments, relocations, and replacements. J.M. has designed projects for urban and rural roadways, complex interstate corridors, and residential neighborhoods. He currently manages HDR San Antonio’s transit program where he brings together local knowledge and national experts to deliver a program that includes Rapid Transit Planning, Strategic Communication and Public Involvement, Facility Planning, Vehicle Electrification, Traffic Studies, and Parking Lot Studies. Prior to HDR, J.M. worked at TxDOT as a transportation engineer and a construction Project Manager.

SAN PEDRO CREEK – presented by Chad Zimmerman and Kerry Averit from SARA

HDR was tasked with transforming the two-mile stretch of the San Pedro Creek into a linear creekway complete with art, walking paths, park areas, and many other amenities, all while accomplishing the main goal of flood control. San Pedro Creek channel is being widened and/or deepened to mitigate any flooding concerns and provide a space in San Antonio that can connect an urban center back to its origin along the creek way. The project includes 4 miles of trails, 11 acres of landscaped area and will remove 30 acres and 38 adjacent structures from the 100-year flood plain. There are three hydraulic crest gates proposed to enhance the human to water interaction and several waterfall features being added to help enhance the feel of the creek. Eight bridges are being replaced and the other six will be retrofitted during construction. There is over 56,000 feet of structural wall being added in the stream corridor. Mr. Zimmerman is a Structural Section Manager in HDR's San Antonio office. In addition to managing the structural team, his experience includes industrial type projects such as mechanical and equipment buildings, warehouses, water/wastewater plants, large pump stations, and headworks buildings. He has specific structural design experience in retaining wall design, construction administration, existing structures evaluations and assessments, concrete design for above and below-grade building/structures, building design in high wind zone regions, building design in moderate seismic zones; steel and concrete moment frames and steel braced frames for new buildings; and finite element analysis modeling for concrete structural systems.
